The Marc and Laurie Krasny Brown Sale

by Lita Solis-Cohen

Marc Brown, a best-selling author and creator of Arthur the aardvark, and his wife, Laurie Krasny Brown, a children’s book author, are downsizing in order to spend more time at their New York City town house and on Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts.

Of the nearly two dozen game boards in the sale, the one voted the best, using dollars as ballots, was an early 20th-century double-sided Parcheesi/checkers game board with drawer, painted red, green, yellow, and blue with a red, green, and yellow argyle-patterned border surrounding a bow-tie square inscribed “Home.” Estimated at $12,000/18,000, it sold for $33,000 to Bailey Island, Maine, dealer James Glazer bidding in the salesroom. On August 5, 2000, it had brought $36,800 at Northeast Auctions’ Virginia Ramsey-Pope Cave sale. Other game boards that sold from the Browns’ collection ranged in price from $2160 to $24,000; there were enough game boards for a beginner to form an instant collection.
